HOTELS PRE-BOOKED
All host hotels (excluding San Nicolas Hotel & Casino Ensenada) have been blocked for BAJA RALLY for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, the hotels are blocked to ensure our aircraft pilots, medical staff, media producers and key staff have beds. We also prevent individual teams or racers with large resources from overbooking host hotels. Finally, host hotels require us to block, or guarantee our dates in order to prevent other events, groups or tours from taking capacity.
WHY BAJA VOYAGER

Fuel & Refueling
Fuel Range and Re-fueling Process: Min Fuel Range 210 KM (130 Miles)
Due to the remote areas and nature of a long-distance, cross country competition, the limited availability of fuel and regulatory environment of local government, any competitor or participant attempting to circumvent, bypass or disregard these policies and procedures does so at their own risk.
*Min. Fuel Range between refueling stations: 210 KM (130 Miles)
*Competitors are required to plan, budget and pay for all their own fuel
*Competitors must pre-purchase a “Mid-Stage” refueling “fuel credit” at -
*3 different refueling types: Bivouac, Pre-Stage & Mid-Stage
*Premium-Grade Fuel is provided for sale at local market price
*The Organizer will not carry or dispense competitor-provided “race” fuel for specially-tuned hi-octane motors.
Vehicles requiring special race fuel are unlikely to complete the competition due to this factor.
1) Bivouac Refueling
Fuel will be provided for cash and “credit” re-sale in each bivouac location except San Felipe where commercial fuel is abundant. In most every instance, competitors failing to completely re-fuel their vehicles by 9:00 PM each day will NOT have enough fuel to continue competing.
***All bivouac refueling ends at 9:00PM sharp each day.
***No fuel will be sold in that bivouac after that point.
2) Pre-Stage Refueling
Pre-stage refers to Special Stages and will vary from day to day between local gas stations en route to special stages and remote refilling stations at or near SS departures. In most cases, a predetermined commercial gas station closest to the departure of SS has designated a full lane with at least 2 premium grade pumps dedicated to the competitors. All competitors are expected to pay directly to the commercial gas station in these instances. Remote Pre-Stage fuel should be purchased and reserved in advance at registration and technical inspection October 8.
3) Mid-Stage Refueling (No Cash)
The length of most stages and combinations of transfer (liaison) is longer than the minimum fuel range and require a mid-stage fueling station to be established at undisclosed strategic locations. No cash can be handled here and anyone receiving any

Navigators Brief
NAVIGATORS’ BRIEFING
Practical Information, Details and Advice from the Stage Builder
Washes, Arroyos & OUED: Be like water
Navigators should be aware when instructed into washes and arroyos (OUED) that they should go with the water or stay with water. Or in more practical terms: where the water went. Washes and arroyos will generally not be “wet” per se, but the navigator should follow the same lines that the water made. A good example of this is when the OUED upstream appears to fork. Similarly to TD, PP and TDSPP, the keen navigator will stay with the main OUED unless instructed by notation to do otherwise. Another thing to be aware of that will help the best navigators keep moving with confidence is to realize whether or not they are navigating upstream or downstream. The difference and ease is significant but only if navigators are aware of it. Moving downstream should always flow more easily than upstream in terms of navigating WITH the flow of water.
Tire & Wheels Management
Mousse is recommended over tubes for the BAJA RALLY on motorbikes because many riders have experienced failures from cacti. Specifically, we recommend and endorse NITRO MOUSSE While the mousse vs. tubes debate for racing is ongoing Always carry a spare tube as a precaution, even if you are running mouses. NITRO Mouses, which have been proven reliable in BAJA RALLY and other desert racing in Baja CA. BAJA RALLY staff are using NITRO Mousses exclusively in our work specifically because of the engineering advancements Nitro has demonstrated. Regardless of your racing preferences, tire and wheel management should not be overlooked.
***Aluminum spoke nipples are discouraged and consistently fail in ALL of our testing and experience.
Black Gear & Helmets
Black racing gear and helmets are strongly discouraged due to unpredictable and fast changing temperature patterns and riding terrain that include tracks on canyon floor and reasonably tight sand washes. It will heat up on the stages.
Practical Application: Black gear and helmets are literally “not cool” and do nothing to increase your potential to succeed.
Flora Fauna
Cactus (or cacti) are present on every stage with “cholla” being most prevalent and hazardous. Navigators new to riding in this environment cannot fully appreciate these plants until they experience one or two. After their first encounter with spines and the physical reaction to them, participants will naturally learn to avoid them subconsciously. When you see !!VG noted on road books you should know this means cholla close by ride the middle of the track.
Livestock & Wildlife
Navigators will cross areas common to grazing cattle, horses and other wild animals. Navigators must first realize they are visiting these animals in their natural habitat and all animals have the right of way. This is a natural law first and a legal matter second. Think of how a street motorcyclist might ride defensively in traffic and stay alert and aware of inattentive motorists texting and driving. That is the absolute very least navigators should do on BAJA RALLY stages and to always be aware of the ground in front of you as well as the lateral perspectives in brushed areas where visibility around curves is impaired. All navigators should look for patterns of animals tracks and excrement and should always ride or drive extremely cautiously in these environments. When there is one or a few there are usually others nearby. Consider that any contact with a large animal ends badly and will always hurt you more than you hurt them, even in a UTV.
Dogs
Great thought and care are placed into protecting dogs and other animals in populated villages and towns. Speed zones (SSZ) are placed for the safety of all and Whether navigators are on transfers or special stages, if you injure mame or kill any dog or small animal you should stop and take care of it immediately. Ultimately, you are responsible for everything you do, both financially and otherwise.
Minerals & Electrolytes
Sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium are minerals which dissolve in water and form electrically charged electrolytes particles called “ions”. Maintaining the correct concentrations of these ions in and outside cells in the body is essential for transmitting electrical impulses along nerves and for muscle contraction. They allow us to perform all the “bioelectrical” functions such as moving, heart-beating, thinking, and seeing. Mineral deficiency or depletion is one of the primary causes of dehydration, exhaustion, cramping and fatigue. All athletes should take great care to NOT begin competition on any stage if they have not ingested supplemental minerals such as electrolyte tablets, Pedialyte (Electrolyte), Gatorade or similar means to insure the athletes system has ample minerals to absorb water into the system. BAJA RALLY believes all athletes should be aware of the need for this measure and expects them to have some form or regimen for this purpose. Caution should be taken to not overdose on mineral supplements due to adverse reactions and consequences of doing so.
Practical Application: The evening prior to competition, athletes may consider drinking half a bottle of Pedialyte (Electrolyte) or drink 16 oz of water treated with an electrolyte tablet. On the morning of competition, athletes may consider drinking the other half of Pedialyte or another electrolyte tablets. ***This is neither medical advice nor any nutritional recommendation. All athletes should consult with their primary physician or medical doctor for specific, personal recommendations.
