ADVRider.com: BAJA RALLY- The Most Successful Failure Out There
"To organize a rally race, you don’t need to be the pride-driven alpha type; you need compassion, empathy, and selflessness. You need understanding, and you need that pure, unadulterated joy of seeing others succeed." – Scotty Breauxman |
ADV to Rally: Baja Rally: Interview with Scotty Breauxman
Baja Rally held annually in Baja California, Mexico, is a five-day cross country roadbook navigation race spanning over a thousand sandy kilometers across the Baja peninsula. Uniquely positioned to be the perfect transition rally between traditional European races and the big North African desert rallies, Baja Rally is open to both pro riders and amateurs. |

XLADV's Eric Hall Comes Home as a Rally Navigator & Brings The "Secret" With Him I'm going to tell you all about it but it's very important that I convey something that's hit me very strongly. I'm convinced that the average Mexican citizen has more decency, honesty, character and kindness in his little finger than unfortunately many people elsewhere in this world. You see it in the respect given to each other, the genuine interest and affection one experiences face to face, the well behaved and well adjusted children who play outside the restaurant while their mother waits on tables and the ranchero with his big hat and four wheel drive vehicle who treats you like you're the most important person on the planet only to discover later that he's one of the the most respected and admired person in his community. -READ MORE- |

Tracks Magazine Baja Rally The Everyman’s Race The BAJA RALLY is the Every-Man’s race. It’s the achievable Dakar. Not because the entry price and operating costs are drastically lower - though for many that can end the race well before the green flag can signal Go! Not just because the organizers work directly with local government to ensure the week-long event provides positive impact on the economy while leaving the most forgiving impact on Baja’s public lands. -READ MORE- |

ADV MOTO MAGAZINE: This is the Future of Off Road Racing in Baja The BAJA RALLY, a navigation-based Rally Raid styled after the infamous Dakar Rally, is a competitor’s sport, a grueling several-day ride mostly aboard motorcycles and side-bysides with only their teams to cheer them on. Too long, too time-consuming and too remote for regular patrons to give their sideline support, this is an event that leaves little impression on anyone, or anything, except for the racers who, considering the rising number of entrants each year, have become enchanted. It can seem discouraging to hold a competition that doesn’t invite an audience, but that’s entirely the point. Let people see it from afar, broadcast and streamed, or better yet, from behind their own set of handlebars. -READ MORE- |
CANADA Canada Moto Guide - BAJA RALLY ORGANIZERS PLAN TRAINING ACADEMY The organizers behind the Baja Rally are opening a school that teaches international rally racing skills. If you want to learn your way around a roadracing track, there are plenty of places to do that in North America. You can even do flat track training, motocross training, and supermoto training. But until now, we hadn’t heard of any place offering serious rally training. That’s partly because, except for the SCORE series in the Baja peninsula, and the Baja Rally, there wasn’t much off-road rally racing in North America for some time, and not many Americans or Canadians are prominent on the international rally scene. -READ MORE- |

REVZILLA DIARY OF A RALLY SUPPORT VOLUNTEER: HOW I SURVIVED BAJA There was a moment, about a week before we left Seattle, when I wondered what the hell I was getting myself into. One of my best friends, Casey Hilliard (better known as @motomancasey on social media), had signed up to compete in the ADV Expert class in some crazy desert race called the Baja Rally. He was going to ride not some lightweight rally racer, but a 1,200 cc BMW HP2 Enduro. And, according to him, I was going to take a couple of weeks off work to drive my truck down as support. Did he really need me? I had zero experience with this sort of thing. But I dove in nonetheless. He is my best friend, after all… -READ MORE- |

America Motorcyclist (AMA Magazine) Answering the Allure of BAJA
The 2015 Baja Rally 3.0 is done and dusted. Looking back, it had all the ingredients to make this one of the most memorable events on the calendar, and it delivered in spades. The Baja Rally is the brainchild of Scott Bloom (a.k.a., Scotty Breauxman) a selfconfessed Dakar fan who wanted to bring a rally raid style event to North America. -READ MORE- |
ADV MOTO Magazine The Next Big Thing South of the Border This event isn’t for the faint of heart. To say it’s rough around the edges is an understatement. But under its rigid layers is hidden a diamond just waiting for the right hands to buff it out. Feelings among the racers were light-hearted and amicable. It should be said that the camaraderie among the 100-plus participants was amazing. Every day, the racers spoke of rough terrain, blazing heat and endless obstacles. Despite the obsessively marked roadbooks and warnings at the nightly meetings, a few good men were injured and sent packing. But not one of the lot denied Baja’s beauty. Racers spoke spiritedly about the enviable sights, killer tracks, and the inevitable feeling of accomplishment at the end of each stage. Someone was overheard saying that rally raids were losing their edge, that no one knew how to “tough it out” anymore. But the Baja Rally, young and spry, isn’t that gentle. The organizers did their best to avoid liability while creating a fun, approachable environment, yet the race is still wild—with no luxurious bathrooms and hotel suites.-READ MORE- |

The Baja Rally – Plenty of Dust, Not A Lot of Glory Navigation racing is not something American’s are all that aware of. Tell someone about your experience racing a TSD rally, and they’ll bat their eyes and stare blankly. Talk about Rally Raids or Dakar, and they might ask you about Africa. So it makes sense that the Baja Rally, a navigation based cross-country race down Mexico’s infamous peninsula, is not a well known event…yet. -READ MORE- |

Muscle Off Road America; Hengeveld Readies for his Shot at the DAKAR Multi-time Baja 1x Champion Steve Hengeveld has officially entered the 2015 BAJA RALLY taking place here from September 28 through October 2, 2015. Hengeveld, a 7-time winner of the Baja 1000 and 6-time winner of the Baja 500, will take his second attempt to win the BAJA RALLY after his impressive 3rd overall podium finish and stage 3 win in the 2014 edition of North America's premiere rally event. |
DIRT RIDER: Hengeveld Takes Step Towards Dakar With Baja Rally Victory
One of the problems with the rally raid (as they’re often referred to in much of the world) is that there simply were none that curious North Americans could easily get to; they were either in Africa or South America or farther! That changed three years ago with the introduction of the Baja Rally held, logically, in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, an off-road playground frequented by both die-hard desert racers and adventuresome trail riders on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. |
ADV MOTO: Building the BAJA RALLY Exclusive Coverage From 2014 “For an American to show up in Mexico with grand plans to stage a frst-time rally event is a bit of a fantasy. We had to make it a Mexican event with real Mexican citizens representing the interests of the racers and sponsors. Now, our board is composed of Mexican nationals and Americans who understand the complex nuances of doing business in Ensenada and Baja California. But after the Baja Rally became a local event, everyone we needed help from began to take us seriously. According to Breauxman, what’s equally important is that the hosts truly believed the good intentions when they were present. “I’ve seen land owners and government ofcials completely change their attitudes once they realized we are not here in Baja California to harvest profts. From the outset, our mission has been to help the people of Baja California by introducing this sport, teaching culture and promoting return visits. This is the three-legged stool that defnes our mission.” |

BAJA RALLY SPAWNS NEW MEXICAN SERIES Now, the Baja Rally’s organizers are joining with Rally Playero Entertainment to announce they are combining two events into one series. The Baja Rally (running Sept. 28-Oct. 2 in 2015) will be the first event of the season, and the second will be Playero’s race, which runs in December next year in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Playero isn’t well-known here in the more northerly regions of the continent, but they’ve been organizing rally raid-style events since 2010. Both rallies will use the same rules, and FIM certified juror Romina Addiego is the operations director for both events. However, the races will be managed by their respective organizations. -READ MORE- |
ADV MOTO MAGAZINE: The BAJA RALLY is Born Exclusive Coverage From 2013 Until now, Baja racing has been dominated by a handful of individuals, families and small dynasties, who enjoy their foothold in this barren and unforgiving landscape. The barriers to new entrants are many, and it’s traditionally been a long shot for the newcomer to get involved. Conversely, the Baja Rally is designed to level the playing field. And, in this kind of terrain, where anything can happen, the navigation element makes racing much more exciting. “In normal off-road racing a 10-minute lead is something you just don’t give up,” Quinn Cody, former Dakar contender, explained at the finish of Day One. “ But out here, that 10 minutes can go pretty quick if you make a navigation error.” Cody finished Day One with the lead by 10 minutes over Andy Grider. -READ MORE- |
